A Life in ArtAlbert Tucker

Featuring paintings from across Albert Tucker’s career, this exhibition traces the trajectory of his work revealing pivotal aspects of Tucker’s aesthetic development as one of Australia’s most distinctive and important artists. Beginning with his fierce social commentaries set within 1940s wartime Melbourne it presents key paintings from his travels in England, Europe and America during which he more deeply absorbed the transformative influences of modernism, and works revealing his subsequent explorations of Australian myth and landscape. Evoking human drama and dissonant allegory, Tucker’s work is also driven by the artist’s dedication to formal experimentation. Displayed throughout the exhibition are several painted and photographic self-portraits, piercing images of self-observation that reflect his stylistic development over the years.
