Alongside the exhibition Brassaï: Secret Paris, Heide is running Photography Protégés, a competition for young photographers.
A master of night photography and well-known for his images of Paris in the 1930s, Brassaï became known as ‘The eye of Paris’. The exhibition Brassaï: Secret Paris focuses on the artist’s iconic images of the city and its people by night, his friendships, his experimental surrealist images, and photographs of street graffiti.
Visit Heide to experience this exhibition and use it as inspiration for your own entry. Look closely at how Brassaï plays with light and composition. Consider how his high-contrast photographs transform the everyday into something surprising and intriguing.
Split into two categories—junior for 7–11-year-olds and senior for 12–17-year-olds—the competition will be judged by Joy Anderson, Brassaï: Secret Paris principal supporter, and Heide’s Artistic Director and co-curator of the exhibition, Lesley Harding.
Shortlisted entries will be displayed in an exhibition at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins between 3 October and 15 November 2026 and the winner of each category will receive a new digital camera!
