Sarah UjmaiaOf Particle and Wave
Sarah Ujmaia, Covalent Structure (detail) 2022–23, graphite on paper, 59.6 x 40.7 cm, courtesy of the artist
Sarah Ujmaia is a first-generation Chaldean artist living and working on unceded Wurundjeri/Woiwurrung and Boon Wurrung/Bunurong lands. Her practice is informed by the wide-reaching impacts of forced displacement and cultural re-writing related to the diasporic experience. Applying translational processes, she regenerates motifs, images and linguistic structures in her material-led approach to object making. Of Particle and Wave presents a series of high-lustre graphite drawings and a sculptural installation of terracotta coils, which collectively contemplate the colonial treatment of minority languages, and the potential of cultural continuation through visual mediums.
This short documentary explores the practice of artist Sarah Ujmaia as she prepares for her first exhibition at Heide Museum of Modern Art.
