Drawing on poetry and the unconscious, these works spanning the 1940s to the present day, delve into the nature of creativity. Artists refer variously to modernist and counter-cultural influences, including symbolist philosophies, Surrealism, psychedelia, and non-Western spiritual traditions. Their images and words express a sense of mystery and the unknowable.

Includes work by Charles Blackman, Sweeney Reed, Sidney Nolan, James Gleeson, Jean Langley, Mike Brown, Mirka Mora, Asher Bilu, Dale Frank, Matthys Gerber, Mikala Dwyer, Mickey Allan and Paul Yore.
