David JollyEverything Else Falls Away

In this exhibition, David Jolly delves back through his thirty-year practice to showcase long forgotten paintings from unexpected collections. This exploration of the archive is complemented by a series of watercolours and artist’s palettes, experimental plaster sculptures, and audio field recordings made over the years in collaboration with composer and sound designer, David Franzke, introducing the ambience of far-flung places into the modernist house.

The exhibition charts Jolly’s wide-ranging travels and interests, from early experiences in Europe, to the fertile urban and natural landscape of Malaysia, graffitied streets of Barcelona, ravaged post-tsunami coastline of Sri Lanka, and scenes from his hometown of Melbourne. Inspired by filmic and photographic genres as well as documentary traditions, David’s paintings reflect on the role of the artist as witness, reporter and traveller.
