In March 2010, prior to the 31 May death of the artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) Heide commenced negotiations with Louise Bourgeois Studio on the development of a significant exhibition for Melbourne of late works by Bourgeois covering the period 1993-2010.
This exhibition will focus on the last 15 or so years of Bourgeois’ output and concentrate on her use of fabric in sculptures and drawings. The exhibition will contain several of Bourgeois’ iconic Cells, one of which is dominated by an enormous spider. It will re-introduce her works to a new generation, but importantly, expand on the first (and only) major Australian survey of Bourgeois’ art held at the National Gallery of Victoria and MCA in 1995/1996. Jason Smith curated that exhibition and is curating this forthcoming exhibition at Heide.
A selection of works by Australian artists for whom Louise Bourgeois is an inspirational influence or whose works similarly give expression to female subjectivity will be exhibited alongside this exhibition in Heide II.
