Forever Young: 30 Years of the Heide Collection traces the history of the Heide Collection, showcasing works which have rarely been seen alongside iconic masterpieces. The exhibition follows a chronology that aligns with the history of each of the buildings onsite, bringing the story to life and celebrating the history, diversity and continuing growth of the Heide Collection.
The Central Galleries within Heide III focus on contemporary art from the 1980s through to today, from expressionist paintings to postmodern installations and works exploring personal and cultural histories. Drawing from the Baillieu Myer Collection of the 80s, which entered the Heide Collection in 1991, alongside other significant acquisitions including a major body of works by David McDiarmid, the works exhibited here represent a diversity of influence and artistic perspectives, and reflect the complexity of contemporary times.
A number of leading Australian artists will be represented in this exhibition, including James Gleeson, Juan Davila, Diena Georgetti, and Peter Booth, alongside a younger generation of artists including Howard Arkley, Peter Tyndall, Imants Tillers, Paul Boston and Rose Nolan. This courageous embrace of the 'art of the day' across successive decades has been vital to Heide from the time when John and Sunday Reed began collecting. This is the 'youngest' part of the collection and it has steadily grown over the last two decades, most significantly in the last five years.
