Heide offers intensive and inspiring professional development (PD) opportunities for educators, trainee teachers and senior students. Relevant links to VELS and the VCE are incorporated into each program with lectures, floor talks and workshops by educators, historians and critics.
Educators Forum: Photography
Tuesday 10 August, 9am–3pm
Natalie King, guest curator of Up Close: Carol Jerrems with Larry Clark, Nan Goldin and William Yang, guides educators through this exhibition of photographs by Australian artist Carol Jerrems and her peers. The medium of photography is further analysed in a presentation by Dr Anne Marsh. A contemporary photographic artist will discuss their arts practice. After lunch, traditional photographic artist Ellie Young shows how to apply early methods of photography to create rich blue Cyanotype prints. Please bring some small objects for this activity that will create interesting silhouettes.

Educators Forum: The Thinking Curriculum
Wednesday 8 September, 9am–3pm
This full-day program, designed for art specialist teachers of all levels, introduces the VELS Thinking Domain and associated standards. Through using thinking tools in practical activities at Heide, teachers will discover how these powerful techniques can enrich classroom learning and how they can actively engage students with refreshing and relevant learning experiences. Teachers are provided with practical strategies to collaborate with colleagues across curricular boundaries. Thinking tools covered include: Multiple Intelligences, Thinker’s Keys, Habits of Mind, Learning Style Analysis tools, the Herrmann Whole Brain Thinking Advantage and Higher Order Thinking.

Educators Forum: Heide Heydays
Thursday 28 October, 9am–3pm
Join Kendrah Morgan, curator of MIRKA and Joy Hester and Albert Tucker Drawings 1938– 1947, to gain insight into the historical importance of Heide to the Australian modernist art movement. Educators will be provided with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the Heide story, through the art and creative relationships of Heide’s past. Following lunch, teachers will be inspired by the local landscape to create their own Heide masterpiece. Take away ideas to motivate students in exploring and responding to Melbourne’s art history as well as practical tasks suitable for all year levels.

Educators Forum: Drawing
Friday 26 November, 9am–3pm
Join Linda Michael, curator of Drawings: Contemporary Artists, for a floortalk and tour of this exhibition to see how contemporary artists have extended our understanding of drawing in a variety of ways. Several artists will talk about their art practice and describe their approach to drawing in the works on display. After lunch teachers will have the opportunity to develop their skills, extend their knowledge base and collaborate on new ideas and directions for engaging students in the art room.
