Mirka Memorial Fund

Mirka Mora, When the Soul Sleeps 1970, oil on canvas, 52.5 x 62 cm, Courtesy of William Mora Galleries, © Estate of Mirka Mora

On 27 August 2018 the Heide community sadly bid adieu to our dear friend, Mirka Mora, one of the most beloved figures in Australia’s cultural landscape.

Our current major exhibition Mirka Mora: Pas de Deux—Drawings and Dolls, and the new publication Mirka and Georges: A Culinary Affair, were conceived with Mirka several years ago as a planned celebration of her 90th year. Many of you generously supported our mid-year appeal to assist with the production of the exhibition, and wrote hundreds of beautiful birthday wishes to Mirka, and we thank you again for your kindness.

Since Mirka Mora's passing, Heide has been in close communication with the Mora family and the Victorian government about how best to honour the extraordinary life, art, personality and contribution to Melbourne's cultural life of this inimitable woman. Our hope is that a significant body of Mirka's work lives on at Heide for generations to come.

The Mirka Memorial Fund is being established at Heide to enable the purchase of Mirka’s archive, studio contents and one of her most important paintings, When the Soul Sleeps, 1970. This work may be familiar to you as the cover of Mirka’s memoir, Wicked But Virtuous: My Life (2002).
