Youth Advisory Committee

If you have ideas about how to make Heide a better place for young people, we want to hear from you!

We are looking for creatively minded 15 to 21 year olds to join our new Youth Advisory Committee, with up to twenty volunteer places available for 2020.

The Committee will meet twice a term and share exciting ideas for programs, projects and events at Heide Museum of Modern Art.

You don’t need to be an existing student leader or have an established position within the community to apply. For more information and to apply click here.

Who can join the Youth Advisory?

Heide aims to include young people who are:

  • 15 to 21 years of age and interested in volunteering
  • enrolled an education facility within Victoria, including public/private secondary schools, TAFE or University in 2020
  • actively involved in school leadership or peer support groups
  • members of local sporting clubs and/or community groups
  • from culturally diverse backgrounds
  • from LGBTIQ+ communities
  • keen to make a difference in the community and the arts

What you would bring to the role

  • An interest in the visual and performing arts, history and sustainability
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities and to improve and build individual leadership skills
  • Preparedness to consult with other young people in schools and the wider community
  • Willingness to be involved in community projects, activities and events, including at Heide Museum of Modern Art

Participation requirements

Youth Advisory Committee

Youth Advisory Committee members will be required to:

  • Attend meetings twice per term at Heide Museum of Modern Art, 7 Templestowe Road, Bulleen on Tuesday or Thursday evenings (to be decided by the group). Meetings will usually run for two hours from 5pm to 7pm, with snacks provided.
  • maintain a 75% attendance rate
  • attend and participate in Heide events/functions as required
  • liaise regularly with the Museum Educator at Heide and communicate with other staff as required
  • deliver a Youth Advisory Project (to be determined by the Committee) during the term of appointment.

Youth Advisory projects 2020, may include activities or events for:

  • National Youth Week
  • Education Week
  • Children’s Week

How to apply

  • To apply please complete the application form (applications must be submitted by 6 December 2019)

What happens next?

  1. When Heide receives a completed application form including a personal reference, the applicant will be notified that their application has been received.
  2. All submissions will be reviewed and shortlisted.
  3. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview in the first week of December 2019.
  4. Individuals will be selected based on their application, personal reference and interview responses.
  5. The successful applicants will receive a letter of offer to become a member of the 2020 Youth Advisory by 20 December 2019.
  6. Successful applicants will be required to return a signed acceptance offer.
  7. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised.

Leadership positions

Heide provide resources, assistance, guidance and support to all members and position holders of the following roles:


  • Welcome all members and guests
  • Chair meetings
  • Keep meetings on track
  • Ensure agenda items have been addressed
  • Ensure everyone’s voice is heard
  • Encourage full participation of all committee members
  • Allocate tasks amongst the group
  • Be impartial and unbiased when making decisions
  • Support the Youth Advisory Secretary in making sure all minute information is accurate
  • Represent the Youth Advisory at meetings, events and functions as requested by Heide Museum of Modern Art


  • Support the Chairperson as required
  • Assume all Chairperson responsibilities in their absence
  • Represent the Youth Advisory at special meetings, events and functions


  • Take all meeting minutes as required, reporting on outcomes at the following meeting
  • Draft any correspondence including emails and letters
  • Represent the Youth Advisory at meetings, events and functions.

Youth Advisory Committee Leadership Election

The Youth Advisory Committee election will occur as part of the first formal meeting in 2020.

  • Elected positions will include Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.
  • The election will be carried out through an anonymous ballot.
  • Youth Advisory Committee Secretary conditions (elected or rotated) will be determined at the first meeting.
